Winsor Pilates Reformer

I am new to Pilates. Do we need a reformer machine to succeed in it?
Do we need a reformer machine to get a great workout or Pilates mat exercises as good? I tried a few workouts even Winsor Pilates mat using the DVD drive and I could not feel my heart working as I had expected. Taking some lessons for obtain the correct form seems to be the best choice for carpet exercise DVD drive. Has anyone purchased a Reformer machine? What are the differences between Pilates and Pilates machine?
I do not think you would need a reformer machine to get a good job on pilates. I have never used a reformer, but I'm sure people have been so successful, as Pilates mat with the machine. I did pilates work outs, and I suggest take a Pilates class that the way to go. Having a live instructor showing you the techniques and giving specific advice to help you see a difference. Look for Pilates in your area .. I know they offer very cheap in community colleges or gymnasiums. I would not spend $ 2,000 on a machine that could find themselves in a garage sale in 5 years when I have classes at low prices are the same.
